It has been stated that there are 450 bird species in Poland (www.komisjafaunistyczna.pl). In the Urszulin Commune there are 235 bird species (ca. 50% of the number of species occurring in Poland), including 168 breeding species (ca. 65% of the number of species occurring in Poland) and 70 species from the attachment I of the “Birds Directive”. To the most relevant breeding species belong: the hen harrier Circus cyaneus, the spotted eagle Aquila clanga, the lesser spotted eagle Aquila pomarina, the short-eared owl Asio flammeus, the Eurasian bittern Botaurus stellaris, the little bittern Ixobrychus minutus, the great egret Egretta alba, the black stork Ciconia nigra, the white stork Ciconia ciconia, the ferruginous duck Aythya nyroca, the white-tailed eagle Haliaeetus albicilla, the Montagu’s harrier Circus pygargus, the black grouse Tetrao tetrix, the spotted crake Porzana porzana, the little crake Porzana parva, the corn crake Crex crex, the crane Grus grus, the great snape Gallinago media, the Mediterranean gull Larus melanocephalus, the common tern Sterna hirundo, the whiskered tern Chlidonias hybrida, the black tern Chlidonias niger, the Eurasian eagle-owl Bubo bubo, the middle spotted woodpecker Dendrocopos medius, the white-backed woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos, the tawny pipit Anthus campestris, the bluethroat Luscinia svecica, the acquatic warbler Acrocephalus paludicola, the barred warbler Sylvia nisoria, the black-tailed godwit Limosa limosa, the common goldeneye Bucephala clangula, the Northern shoveler Anas clypeata, the common redshank Tringa totanus, the Eurasian curlew Numenius arquata, the Caspian gull Larus cachinnans, the red-breasted flycatcher Ficedula parva, the European pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca, the ortolan Emberiza hortulana, the little ringed plover Charadrius dubius, the black-necked grebe Podiceps nigricollis. Most interesting among non-breeding birds are: the red-throated loon Gavia stellata, the black-throated loon Gavia arctica, the tundra swan Cygnus columbianus, the little gull Hydrocoloeus minutus, the little egret Egretta garzetta, the purple heron Ardea purpura, the pallid harrier Circus macrourus, the golden eagle Aquila chrysaetos, the ruff Philomachus pugnax, the little tern Sterna albifrons, the saker falcon Falco cherrug, the red-footed falcon Falco vespertinus, the jack snipe Lymnocryptes minimus, the steppe eagle Aquila nipalensis, the horned lark Eremophila alpestris, the snow bunting Plectrophenax nivalis.
